Founded by Hastamalaka, one of the famous disciples of Sree Sankara, about 1200 years ago.
About Vadakke Madham
This was one of the Sannyasi Madhams established along with three other Madhams in Thrissur by the other three disciples of Sree Sankara: Sureswara (Naduvil Madham), Totaka (Idayil) Madham and Padmapada (Thekke Madham).
About 100 years, Vadakke Madham ceased to be a Sannyasi Madham. It is believed that the last Sannyasi of lineage dedicated the Madham to the Rigvedians of Kerala under their head, the Vadhyan.
From that time onwards the institution began to be known as Vadakke Madham Rigvedha Padhasala.
