History

In keeping with the tradition of monastic learning, Vadakke Madham initially functioned as a monastery. Around 400 years ago, the head of the Madham donated extensive land and resources to establish a dedicated Vedavidyalaya (Vedic School). The Thrissur Yogam of Vedic Scholars, comprising 400 Namboothiri families with Vedadhikara, was formed to manage it.

Years of Legacy & Tradition

It is a strong belief that Adi Shankaracharya of Kalady, the greatest proponent of Advaita Vedanta, established four monasteries across India. Following his path, his four disciples founded four Madhas under one roof in Thrissur:

  1. Thekke Madham by Padmapadacharya
  2. Idayil Madham by Thodakacharya
  3. Naduvil Madham by Sureshwaracharya
  4. Vadakke Madham by Hasthamalakacharya

About 400 years ago, Vadakke Madham transitioned into a full-fledged Mahaveda Vidyalaya when its head endowed lands and assets to form a Vedavidyalaya governed by Thrissur Yogam—a collective of 400 Namboothiri families. Today, it stands as a centre of Vedic research and learning.
